If your organization uses Stripe as your payment processor, ServiceReef offers a helpful feature that allows donors to cover credit card processing fees during the checkout process. This optional feature is a great way to recover processing costs and direct more funds toward your mission.
Where to Find This Setting
To enable or configure this feature:
Navigate to your Org Settings.
Click on the General tab.
Scroll down to the Preferences section.
Locate the Fundraising Settings section.
Find the setting titled Donor Covers Credit Card Fees.
There are three configuration choices for this setting:
1. Disabled
No prompt is shown to donors.
Donors are not given the option to cover fees.
2. Enabled – Not Selected by Default (Recommended)
Donors will see the option to cover credit card fees at checkout.
The checkbox will be unchecked by default (opt-in).
Donors must manually select it to add the fee amount to their total.
This is ServiceReef's recommended setting, balancing donor choice with clear transparency.
3. Enabled – Selected by Default
Donors will see the option to cover credit card fees at checkout.
The checkbox is checked by default, meaning the fee is automatically added unless the donor unchecks it.
Setting the Fee Amount
Once one of the “Enabled” options is selected, your organization can define the fee calculation parameters:
Per Transaction Amount – A flat dollar amount added to each transaction.
Percentage Per Transaction – A percentage of the donation amount to be calculated and added.
These values are used to automatically calculate and display the processing fee on the donation checkout page when the donor opts to cover the fee.
Example
If a donor gives $100 and your settings include:
$0.30 per transaction, and
2.9% of the total donation,
Then, if the donor opts to cover the fees, the total charged would be:
$100 + ($0.30 + $2.90) = $103.20
Notes
This feature is only available for organizations using Stripe.
Covered fees are included in the total donation amount for the donor’s receipt and transaction record.
